A Study on the Elderly`s Ego Integrity and Death Anxiety

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine if there is a relationship between elderly people¡¯s ego integrity and death anxiety. The subject for this study were 368 elderly people (male 148, female 220) over 60 years of age with no physical and cognitive damage, who were residing in Gyeongsan city and attending colleges or welfare centers for the aged. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS WIN(ver. 12.0) program, and factor analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression, path analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffe¡¯ test were utilized. The results were as follows. First, the elderly¡¯s ego integrity and death anxiety were the average. Second, elderly people¡¯s ego integrity was found to be statistically difference according to sex, academic background, health condition, existence/nonexistence of volunteering, residence pattern, satisfaction of economic condition and home life. Then elderly people¡¯s death anxiety showed significantly difference depending on sex, academic background, religion, health condition, residence pattern, satisfaction of economic condition and home life. Third, it was found that the variables had an effect on death anxiety in attitude toward life, past-present acceptance, existence/nonexistence of region, academic background. That is, it was found that death anxiety was lower in the group of the elderly who had more positive attitude toward life, higher past-present acceptance, existence of region, higher academic background.
